چکیده

CF: I am flattered by this reference to my own work. But we should let our intended audience know a bit a more about the background of those two contributions. I still remember that I imagined to be quite bold and provocative by submitting a paper to a workshop on Soft Computing—organized by you, by the way, in 2003—that suggested already in the title that logicians should not just presume that the are properly dealing with vagueness when they investigate fuzzy logics, but should pay attention to the extended discourse on so-called ‘theories of vagueness’ in philosophy to understand the various challenges for correct reasoning in face of vagueness. I was really surprised when my submission was not only accepted, but when you even decided to make me an invited speaker, which entailed a longer presentation. A version of the contribution soon afterwards appeared as [7], again on your invitation.

Comments on A Conversation About Fuzzy Logic and Vagueness by

In the spirit of this enlightening conversation and indeed of this entire volume—promoting mutual understanding and learning between philosophers, logicians and linguists working on vagueness related issues—I shall in these comments consider three points, which if not kept in mind have significant potential to promote misunderstanding between practitioners of these three disciplines. All three ...

Importing Human Tutor's Conversation Strategy into Dialog Systems for Language Learning using Fuzzy Logic

Foreign language tutors have some conversation strategies to help learners to successfully finish a learning session. But these strategies are generally described by vague linguistic terms so that they cannot be easily transformed to a computational model. Therefore, this study presents a fuzzy logic-based method that considers learner's proficiency level and difficulty of system responses toge...

Analyzing fuzzy and contextual approaches to vagueness by semantic games

How can natural language be ‘understood’ by computers? Or, more specifically, how can the semantics of a natural language statement be modeled by means of logic in order to facilitate formal reasoning? This perennial problem has many, partly intertwined facets; one of them being the pervasiveness of vagueness in all natural languages. Originally discarded by Frege as a ‘defect’ of ordinary lang...

Reliability Measures Measurement under Rule-Based Fuzzy Logic Technique

In reliability theory, the reliability measures contend the very important and depreciative role for any system analysis. Measurement of reliability measures is not easy due to ambiguity and vagueness which exist within reliability parameters. It is also very difficult to incorporate a large amount of uncertainty in well-established methodologies and techniques. However, fuzzy logic provides an...

Fuzzy Logic and Theories of Vagueness

Fuzzy Logic has been successfully applied to all kinds of scenarios, where degrees of membership and truth can be systematically discerned. However it is highly contentious whether this fact renders Fuzzy Logic an ideal tool for modelling reasoning with vague concepts and propositions. There is a lively and prolific debate in analytic philosophy about so-called theories of vagueness. Interestin...
